Throughout Europe and the wider world, it is now recognized that assessment systems can exert a powerful effect on the curriculum, teaching and learning. Rather than decrying this, those involved need to use the processes of assessment, testing and examinations as positive forces for improvement in educational quality. This can take many forms. It can mean improving assessment practices in the classroom, embedding them in the learning process, and perhaps relating them to summative assessment.

It can mean using careful analyses of assessment data to provide useful feedback on strengths and weaknesses for individuals, assisting both teachers in teaching and schools in curriculum evaluation. To support these, there are many developments in the use of technology, either delivering assessments or supporting marking and administration. Similarly, innovative new statistical and psychometric procedures are being developed which will provide greater insights.
